But Jung focused on the symbolic, Baudrillard on the sign. another interesting text in this regard, in case you haven't already come across it, is ricoeur's "freud and philosophy." he examines the distinction between symbol and sign in psychoanalysis (although, in his next work, "rule of metaphor," under the influence of american language theorists, he totally changes his approach to interpretation). what makes the work even more interesting is that lacan and his circle accused ricoeur of stealing lacan's ideas for this book. as such, the book is an interesting amalgamation of a lot of thinking on the symbol. toderov's "theories of the symbol" is also a good read, but he remains inconclusive on how to approach the symbol ... brent ...
