Yes, technology is often unreliable when we expect more of it than is
reasonable, and anything nuclear, "peaceful" or otherwise, is pretty
distasteful. But detterence relies on human nature. Rather than trust our
leaders to show good sense, we present them with the threat of destruction
if they don't act responsibly.
