Eric,
I think related to the SI - that Debord and Vaneigem to a lessor extent
have both written exemplery texts on what could perhaps be considered as
the points from which a contemporary morality can or could be
defined.... It's importance however, for me, lies in the surrealist
inflection that runs through it and the hidden relations with Breton,
rather than Bataille. By the way have you ever seen the photograph of
Benjamin and Bataille togther?

"...Certainly the sidewalks were laid down in the interests of those who
go by car or horse. When?" Benjamin The Arcades - M14,6

Until recently the roads of america were what the pavements were to the
flaneurs - of course we both know where the contemporary equivilant of
the flaneurs are now...

Glen,

Is there any chance you could modify my 92 Toyota Tercel into a swifter
mode of Mercurial flight in order to challenge Steve to a drag race that
will prove to him once and for all which one of the leftists is truly in
the right?

my pistons are already racing.... and I'm putting STP in my tank....Steve,
I'll meet you at the green light...

eric

P.S. - I agree with you, Steve, the movies do a much better job of showing
us our auto-erotic cravings; you mentioned Godard before... Breathless,
Band of Outsiders, Weekend all reek of the car culture that is driving
through us.

By the way, since the situationalists have been mentioned, in my
Situationist Anthology, there is a interesting rant made against the early
Godard, putting him down, unfairly in my opinion. Which leads to the
overwhelming question, What would the situational do if they existed today?
Is it possible to imagine a contemporary form of Situationalism or has it
become merely a nostalgic leftist cult, an old photograph smeared with
lipstick traces and tawny cigarette burns?
