The annual spend of the welfare state systems in Europe is considerably
more astronomical than any of the 'billionaires' - though of couyrse in
a just society we would redistribute their wealth...

Steve,

>With regard to your negative responses to 'Empire' (actually Hugh have you ever responded >positively to a left wing text?) Given the number of  texts in the world - 1 acceptable and ?>workable idea in 490 pages is quite a a good ratio.  Compared to some authors i could mention >it is an extraordinarily good ratio.

**I respond to "Workers of the world unite."  Don't know if that is a text or not.

You illustrate the reason I read very few texts of left or right.

Good news for you folks.  I hope they are better than the U.S. mess.

A handful of billionaires in the U.K, Germany, France and Italy, has enough funds to provide
7 million workers with a year's wage.  They may be strong on liberte and fraternite, but seem to come up short on egalite.  Seems they get most of the welfare, whether or not they ever spend Euros to insure democratic legislation that will make them wealthier.
..
Best,
Hugh
