Eric,

You might find something of interest in an old essay of mine, "An Archeology
of Cyberspaces," published by Routledge in David Porter's collection _Internet
Culture_ and then again, in edited form, in their _Cybercultures Reader_.
Written before my encounters with Nancy, Blanchot, Agamben, and Co., and
responding in part to the "family values"/"return to traditional
community"/"post-post modern" culture wars rhetoric that had a strong appeal
even in "left academic" circles, it's something i still return to from time to
time when i need to remind myself of the real confusions and conflicts in out
"common sense" about "community." It's an open-ended piece - particularly in
unedited form - better as a tool to think against/with than a source of
answers. But folks still occasionally write to tell me they find it useful. It
seems to have some bearing on the current discussions.

I'll try to find the etext of this and post it on my website. Alas, the
liquidation of my bookstore and the bar-soundtech job that keeps the wolves
further from the door take a lot of my time so that, and several other
promised responses, may take a little while.

-shawn
