My next posting will pursue the conversation, but I wanted to ask you
first.  Who is Courtney-Grimes?  
 
I admit I never heard of this writer. I checked Amazon and found zilch. 
 
I agree with you that MacLeod offers little guidance for the immediate
issues confronting us.  His novels, however, are fascinating meditations
on how various political philosophies and technologies may impact upon
us in the distant future.  I am enjoying them and find his political
awareness a refreshing change to the usual cyber-punk mirror shaded hip
alienation.  
 
My guess, however, is that in spite of what your daughter says, the
cyborg, like technology, won't go away, but will probably lead in the
future to even more bizarre permutations and obscene couplings.  
 
You seem to consistently approach the concept of the cyborg from the
standpoint of engineering, rather than culturally and politically.  My
guess is that is one big source of the chasm in this argument.
