Steve, My next posting will pursue the conversation, but I wanted to ask you first. Who is Courtney-Grimes? I admit I never heard of this writer. I checked Amazon and found zilch. I agree with you that MacLeod offers little guidance for the immediate issues confronting us. His novels, however, are fascinating meditations on how various political philosophies and technologies may impact upon us in the distant future. I am enjoying them and find his political awareness a refreshing change to the usual cyber-punk mirror shaded hip alienation. My guess, however, is that in spite of what your daughter says, the cyborg, like technology, won't go away, but will probably lead in the future to even more bizarre permutations and obscene couplings. You seem to consistently approach the concept of the cyborg from the standpoint of engineering, rather than culturally and politically. My guess is that is one big source of the chasm in this argument. eric

Steve,
My next posting will pursue the
conversation, but I wanted to ask you first. Who is
Courtney-Grimes?
I admit I never heard of this writer. I
checked Amazon and found zilch.
I agree with you that MacLeod offers
little guidance for the immediate issues confronting us. His novels, however, are fascinating
meditations on how various political philosophies and technologies may impact
upon us in the distant future. I am
enjoying them and find his political awareness a refreshing change to the usual
cyber-punk mirror shaded hip alienation.
My guess, however, is that in spite of
what your daughter says, the cyborg, like technology, won’t go away, but will
probably lead in the future to even more bizarre permutations and obscene
couplings.
You seem to consistently approach the
concept of the cyborg from the standpoint of engineering, rather than
culturally and politically. My
guess is that is one big source of the chasm in this argument.
