SEATTLE DAY AFTER PEACE VIGIL
March 21, 2003 - Federal Building, Seattle
David C. Korten

I stand before you today as a patriotic American, a former Captain in the United States Air Force, a veteran of the Vietnam War,

This day, Friday March 21, 2003, will go down in history as one of America's darkest hours. Our brave sons and daughters have been ordered onto the battle field to risk the ultimate sacrifice and American planes and missiles have been launched in a campaign of "shock and awe" against the Iraqi people, possibly the most brutal air assault in history short of dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. It is a war most of the world considers unnecessary, immoral and illegal. On this same day the Republicans who control the House of Representatives have used the cover of war and the nation's willingness to sacrifice for the sake of the troops to approve a massive tax cut for the wealthiest Americans and cut disability benefits for military veterans - thus setting a new standard for political hypocrisy.
