In the newspaper today a profile of Zygmunt Bauman - to discover that he 
is 78 is a shock.... I had assumed given my comparative recent noticing 
of his work sometime during the 90s that he was younger, but why did I 
assume that? But anyway in the midst of the profile the following gem 
"...The real pessimism is quietism - not doing anything because nothing 
can be changed...." But then his work is marked by a postmodern 
pessimism, a critique of the postmodern human condition, and an 
extraordinarily 'harsh critique of liberal capitalism' -
