Lois,

But, I wasn't insulted. I think you are confusing an intellectual
disagreement with an emotional response. I remain open to pursuing a
conversation with you; one, as I implied, need not even involve Lyotard.
I am perfectly fine with talking to you in my own voice.

The reason I sent the previous posting was that I wanted to confront you
the fact that the concept of invention you are putting forth seems
fairly commonplace to me and quite in keeping with the reigning nonsense
trumpeted by our media. Unfortunately, you mentioned Charles Olson as
one of your inspirations (a poet I happen to know very well) and my
reading of Olson (like that of Lyotard) seems to be very different from
yours. In my view, his idea of the open field is emphatically not the
"private-soul-at-any-public-wall" POV you seem to be advocating. But
perhaps I am misunderstanding. Please explain.

One suggestion I would make to you, however, is this. E-mail is not a
therapy couch. If I write something, don't immediately ignore it out of
hand and slip into your therapist mode. There are some (like me) who
find this approach simply patronizing. I want to be heard first before
you start doling out your advice.

I hope we can learn to do better than that!

eric
