Geof,

I thought that was a beautifully written and very moving post. As
someone a little older, with my own economic worries, I certainly
sympathize with your plight. I also have another friend who is an
academic, struggling to get by these days.

It seems that we're all in the same boat. But while we're all in this
together, we're not all at the same level. At the Titanic goes down,
many of us who were once in coach may now find ourselves in steerage.
The skipper cries out; "Women and children first!", but we all know that
somehow in the end the rich will get to the lifeboats before anyone
else.

As a variation on the illusive nature of the pleasant grassy promontory
overlooking the stormy sea in an age of the reflexive society, I am also
reminded of the story by Poe, in which a masked ball is held during the
plague. The participants all think they are safe until midnight comes
and the real unmasking occurs.

Perhaps, it could be renamed - "The Masque of the Red-State Death".
