Subject: Re: M-FEM: Roediger

I'm new to this discussion group, but already feel it's been
valuable. Having just finished reading Roediger's The Wages of Whiteness, I
was both intrigued and impressed by the comments of Leo and Rakesh.

I took Leo's suggestion and looked at Greg Meyerson's essay at the
Cultural Logic web site. (Cultural Logic is the new electronic Marxist
journal; it can be reached at either http://eserver.org/clogic/ or
http://eng.hss.cmu.edu/clogic/). Meyerson criticizes Roediger's
psychoanalytic explanations for the development of racist ideology among
white workers, offering instead a Marxian social control explanation, which
is also articulated by Ted Allen, The Invention of the White Race (Verso,
1994). Meyerson's essay is lively and thought-provoking and seems to
resonate with much of what Leo and Rakesh have written here.
