Sorry for the delay in posting this welcome, but I've had only a couple minites a day to spend on the lists of late. I have the time for catch-up now because like the rest of the city of Detroit I will be home with flu for couple days. Your posts on MRTA and the situation in Peru was very interesting and the articles from El Diario International are being anxiously looked forward to. By the way, the Wall Street Journal had an article in today's edition (Monday, Jan. 6, 97 p.A8) that mentions El Diario: >In the past, the Peruvian government has cracked down on >traditional forms of subversive propaganda, such as newspapers. >Peruvian security forces were widely thought to be behind the >fire bombing of the offices of El Diario, the now-defunct >newspaper of the Shining Path, a larger, more violent Peruvian >rebel group. But countering propaganda on the Internet is much >more complicated, authorities concede. "We can't very well cut >phone lines and confiscate computers," says one Peruvian >government official.(As much as they would like to do so. -Jay) This is typical of a lot of the information or disinformation that's been published and shown on TV since the hostage situation began. I haven't seen a single post that referred to the Communist Party of Peru (PCP) by their proper name, always it's Shining Path or Sendero Luminoso. They are always counter-posed as being more violent, less desirable "rebels", and this by MRTA themselves or supporters or the bourgeois press. I don't think I've seen a communique from MRTA yet that hasn't attacked the PCP in it. All the articles call MRTA "Marxist rebels" but no Marxism is to be found anywhere in their interviews or in their actions that I have been able to detect. The positive thing in this is the world-wide attention on Peru, Fujimori's dictatorship and the situation in Peru. I have been swamped with calls and emails requesting info on the difference between the PCP and MRTA. I have even gotten phone calls from prisoners in a Maximum Security Prison (out-state) asking what's up and more material and to recieve EDI. I have gotten over a dozen new people on our mailing list to recieve Peru information and EDI. A group in Texas wants to start a new Peru Support Committee. Here in Detroit, Peru was never in the news, or hardly any world news at all, now Lima is on several times a day on the TV news. People all over are discussing Peru, not just political activists. We are taking advantage of all this interest. I spoke with a group of progressive people on the Peoples War for over two hours very recently. It went great! There has been a great foaming and gnashing of teeth from the reactionaries on the Peru lists, upset at the world wide attention being brought up exposing the fascist regime and their dictator, Fujimori. At least one of them has posted his anger to this list (M-G). A person(s) posting from a Peruvian government address has sent a threatening mail and I have been mailbombed by some people through an anonymous remailer. These rabid dogs have really shown their true colors lately. I hope you can somehow stay on the list for long long while, Adolfo. I think both friends and foes have missed you alike.
