According to our latest information , during the last two weeks Islamic
authorities in Iran have arrested over 50 oil workers. The representatives
of oilworkers from Tehran refinery are amongst those arrested and their
families have no news of their whereabouts. According to our sources oil
refineries are under strict control with military forces installed in the
refineries.

The government has released a number of workers from the demonstration of
16th Feb 1997 however many other oil workers have been arrested
subsequently. A total of 60 workers are under arrest at present. As we
wrote in our previous statement two of the oil workers who demonstrated
outside the Oil Ministry on the 16th Feb 1997 died in hospital from
injuries received that day, two other oil workers arrested that day are
reported to have died under torture in prison. As the government refuses to
inform relatives of those arrested of their whereabouts it is difficult to
assess the state ofother arrested workers.

We call on all progressive forces to help us save the lives of arrested Oil
workers and to secure their release by putting pressure on the Islamic
regime in Iran. This is the only way to save the lives of Iran's Oil
workers.
