ideology outside the realm of everyday experience, assuming that not only
must it equate with, say, socialism but, further, that it demands an
endlessly refining self-examination - what kind? democratic socialist or
social democrat? Marxist or Marxist-Leninist? Maoist? Trotskyist or one of
its thousand variations? - followed by expiation for or explanation of
(depending) all the sins of Stalin, followed by a roadmap to the
Revolutionary Tomorrow and, at the end of the line, the complete program
for governing. It's enough to make anyone want to head for the bar and
forget the whole thing."
