Struggle for Barseb=E4ck N-plant continues
[Posted: 22.11.97]

Here in Sweden, the perfectly well-functioning, modern and
environment-friendly nuclear power plant at Barseb=E4ck in the
south now faces a serious threat of destruction, at the hands
of those truly medieval forces who are in political power.

The scandalous and fanatical closure plans of the Swedish
government are not an isolated local phenomenon but stand in
an important international context.

There is a global campaign going on since many years, insti-
gated by some of the most powerful groups of people in the
world, against the further development of industry, even for
curtailment of that which there is, and against important parts
of modern science and technology. It's a campaign against
present-day civilization itself. It hits at vital interests of
almost everybody on earth.

The main present-day watchword of this campaign is "sustainable
development". That mendacious term cannot disguise the fact
that the programmes really envisaged and engaged in, on the
contrary mean *sustained destruction and retrogression*.

For several reasons, the case of the Barseb=E4ck plant in Sweden
is a certain test case also internationally for these dangerous
sustained-destruction intentions.

Therefore - and see further explanations below - I once more
appeal to people also in other countries: Please protest, for
instance by sending an e-mail to the government here, at
<regeringen-AT-sb.gov.se>, against its plan to close that plant.
(Cc to <kommitten-AT-hotmail.com> - Committee Save Barseb=E4ck.)

This plan has not the slightest justification on any technical
grounds but is due only to political motives of the very worst
kind.

The (non-party-political) Committee Save Barseb=E4ck, of which
I'm a member, is organizing a protest meeting here in Malm=F6,
a city some 40 km from the threatened plant, next Saturday, 29
Nov (at 12 noon, Stortorget), directed against a proposed
"law" which has as its sole purpose to make the illegal
closure of the (privately-owned) Barseb=E4ck plant "legal".

That "law" would be flagrantly unconstitutional, in the first
place, and would contravene the European Convention, which
Sweden has signed, in the second.

So this again shows how utterly fanatical and desperate are
these forces in their dstruction intentions.

Against the politicians directly responsible, including the
prime minister, G=F6ran "Greenie" Persson, a police complaint
has already been made, by me on 17 February. I'm accusing
them of conspiracy to commit aggravated sabotage, which their
action does amount to according to Swdish law. So far, nothing
has been heard concerning this complaint from the prosecuting
authorities in charge.

Also, a complaint has been filed against these politicians
with the European Court, by another citizen of Sweden.

Unfortunately, the main opposition party in Sweden, the con-
servative (m) party, which at an early stage promised to re-
voke any closure decision if it won the coming elections of
autumn, 1998, later has gone back on that promise and has
adopted in effect a standpoint of more or less accepting this
serious sabotage conspiracy - a standpoint of an accessory to
it, in fact. Thus, practically the whole "establishment" in
this country is in on this envisaged act of barbarism.

People in general in Sweden strongly oppose the closure plan,
but have practically no means of combating it in an organized
manner. This is *the* big problem here, as no doubt elsewhere
too where similar things are occurring, respectively are
being planned.

Because of the formerly relatively modern policy of the ruling
circles in Sweden, this country still is the one in the world
which has the largest amount of nuclear-power electricty per
inhabitant and annum. Between 1970 and 1985, 12 reactors in
four power plants were built here, their effect totalling some
10 GW. They produce 70 TWh of electricity annually, or 50% of
the total electricity production in Sweden, a country with
close to 9 million inhabitants. France, for instance, has a
higher percentage of its electricity produced by nukes (75%),
but uses relatively less electricity overall.

>From the early 1970s on, there was instigated the massive arch-
reactionary anti-nuclear-energy campaign in the world, and in
particular in certain countries. Sweden for certain reasons -
not least, its ruling circles' considerable dependence on the
two superpowers (then), from which this campaign has largely
emanated, the USA and the Soviet Union - was hit hard.

Precisely the Barseb=E4ck plant became a focus of these attacks,
as far as the fraudulent "popular resistance" was concerned;
a number of manifestations against it took place in the 70s,
some of them with as many as 10 000 or more participants. This
above all was due to the mendacious anti-modern propaganda in
the media, which fooled some of the people for some time. Even
then, the majority of Swedes in reality were *in favour of*
nuclear energy, as a number of facts show.

These reactionary and manipulated demonstrations were, from the
very beginning, part of a quite particular campaign against in-
dustry in general precisely here in the south of Sweden, where
this country geographically connects to Denmark and then to
continental Europe. It was, very clearly, a superpower-instiga-
ted campaign, which had as one of its purposes to prevent the
industrial linking-up, or growing-toghether, of Scandinavia
with the Europen continent. One other main target was the
planned bridge over the Sound (=D6resund) from Malm=F6 to Copen-
hagen. This bridge now at long last is under construction. The
decision for it came in 1990, when one of its most powerful
behind-the-scenes adversaries, the Soviet Union, had started to
crumble. But the Barseb=E4ck plant is opposed, on the sly, above
all by the main ruling circles in the USA - today very powerful
of course. "Greenie" Persson above all is *their* muppet.

Despite the fact that the Swedish people in their great majo-
rity always have *opposed* the campaign against nuclear energy,
ever worse, ever more medieval, decisions have been taken
against that energy source by successive governments here.

In 1980, there was a "referendum on nuclear power". That was
none of your ordinary swindles. People had the "choice" of
either "voting in favour of" three "NO:s" or else abstain!
A repetition of the Inquisition's 1633 "verdict" against Gali-
lei, as someone rightly pointed out, and not least intended
for international consumption: "Look, the Swedes voted No!".

Later in that year, 1980, all further construction of nuclear
power plants here (except those under way already) was pro-
hibited by parliament, and this in 1984 was made a law. In
1987, even research and projecting with a view to construct a
nuclar power reactor in this country was banned - by the par-
ticularly infamous so-called "brainwash paragraph", which to
this day has not been repealed.

In 1988, there was a desicion by parliament to close down and
destroy one reactor at Barseb=E4ck and one other in 1995/96.
The outrage and resistance of the Swedish people against this
forced the rulers to back down on it in 1991.

But now, thus, they're coming again - and being instigated by
international reaction again - with their mad destruction
schemes. This time, the threat is more serious than ever.

And obviously, now as in 1980, the action in Sweden must be
seen not least in an international context: The anti-indus-
trial forces, the very worst enemies of the peoples in the
world, want a kind of international precedent for their
saying: "Look, it's quite OK to close down and destroy a
modern, well-functioning nuclear power plant!" They want a
"posthumous victory" too for that earlier campaign of theirs
precisely here in southern Sweden.

Which is why I'm asking people in other countries too: Please
join us in our protests agains this sabotage plan here in
Sweden! Next time, similar actions of destruction may be un-
dertaken where you live, if they're not under way already.

Rolf M.
