=A45. WHO DID KILL OLOF PALME? IN WHAT POLITICAL
CONTEXT MUST THIS 1986 MURDER BE SEEN?

Swedish prime minister Palme was murdered, on 28.02.1986, by a
command of the Soviet social-imperialist military intelligence
service GRU - or possibly, by some other and secret organization
obeying, in any case, the command of the same forces, certain
circles within the military establishment of the then existing
social-imperialist Soviet Union. This the facts clearly show.

On the part of the main forces of US imperialism, who must have
known the basic facts of this murder from an early stage on,
after it had been perpetrated, there has been at least a cover-
up in relation to the general public of this crime, reflecting
some reactionary interests which both superpowers had in common.

The forces who ordered the murder of Palme in 1986 no doubt are
approximately the same as those who later, in 1991 and in 1993,
attempted coups against the other, then ruling, bourgeois reac-
tionaries in the Soviet Union, respectively, in Russia.

That murder, several facts indicate, above had to do with an
internal power struggle in the then Soviet Union, over what
course for the reactionaries ruling that country to adopt for
avoiding, if possible, their downfall. That is, that very down-
fall that later did occur, at least partially and to a large
degree, and whose likelyhood must have been seen by the various
forces of Soviet social-imperialism even at that earlier stage,
in 1986, and in fact earlier still.

>From the early/mid-1970s on, the then ruling Soviet social-impe-
rialist circles for many years had put practically everything on
one card, in their attempts at achieving world domination, in
their bitter rivalry with US imperialism, and at the same time,
for the very preservation of their arch-reactionary rule: That
of achieving domination over Western Europe, by all means inclu-
ding a possible large-scale military aggression. Obviously, a
mad and impossible scheme, but as history shows, that wasn't the
first such scheme by reationary rulers either.

Accordingly, the Soviet Union built up an enormous military
machine, geared to offensive land and sea operations not least,
at large cost of course to the economy of that country.

Against some countries of Western Europe, against Sweden not
least, certain extremely provocative military actions were un-
detaken by the Soviet social-imperialists in the mid/late 1970s
and also in the early 1980s. I shall not go into the details of
these here but save this for a later posting. They very largely
were covered up by the mass media here.

Eventually, at least some among the Soviet ruling circles came
to realize that the aggressive plan for domination of Western
Europe couldn't work. In the preventing of its realization, not
least the brilliant international united-front policy of socia-
list China under the leadership of Mao Zedong, which took pre-
cisely the interests of the international proletariat and the
peoples of all peoples in the world as its guideline, was a very
important, perhaps even decisive, factor (as I've pointed to
earlier, in "UNITE! Info #3en" of 01.01.96).

In early 1985, Gorbachev became president of the Soviet Union.
His basic concept was a very reactionary one too, but it was
against the "military option" favoured by some forces within the
Soviet military establishment who at that time still retained a
large portion of the actual state power in the Soviet Union.

Gorbachev's line was that of a reactionary alliance with US im-
perialism, characterized not least by an intended extreme ver-
sion of that arch-reactionary, anti-industrial and anti-worker
"green" policy which has played such an increasingly important
role in the planning of all the main reactionary ruling forces
in the world in the last two-three decades.

In Gorbachev's planning, the then prime minister of Sweden since
many years back, Olof Palme, who was also an internationally re-
latively well-known personage, played a certain (even if ob-
viously relatively minor) role: Palme for instance was invited
by him to attend a congress of the revisionist ruling party of
the Soviet Union in March, 1986.

This obviously was part of the motive of those other social-
imperialist forces for ordering the murder of Palme: They wanted
to force Gorbachev back into their foreign-expansion policy
largely based on the Soviet military force.

For some further explanation of that motive, it's suitable to
take a brief look at some factors in the political line of Palme
and of Sweden during his years as prime minister.

=A46. ON PALME'S POLITICAL LINE (ASPECTS)

In Sweden itself, Palme was a person who to a large extent
dominated the political scene. He in that respect had no peers.
Some factors in his political line, as it developed and in part
changed over the years, were:

First of all, Palme originally was brought up, as a rising
politician in the Swedish social-democratic party under Erlan-
der, in the pro-US-imperialist line of that party at the time,
the 1950s and early 1960s. In 1965, he changed his standpoint
from earlier having condemned the then starting anti-Vietnam-war
demonstrations here into giving them a certain support; in
1970, he even marched in one together with the ambassador to
the Soviet Union of the DRV. And in 1972, he, as now prime
minister, strongly condemned the US imperialists' bombing of
Hanoi, causing a certain rift with the USA.

True to a certain "traditional" policy of the Swedish bourgeoi-
sie, Palme shifted his support from one big power to another in
the early 1970s: He during a certain time turned into a rela-
tively nasty propagnadist of the "detente" public fraud at that
time and of the then rising and more aggressive superpower, So-
viet social-imperialism. Probably largely because of this it was
too that he was defeated by an alliance led by F=E4lldin in the
elections to parliament of 1976, which then ended many decades
of social-democratic rule in Sweden.

Palme however did never go as far as to become a sheer lackey of
the Soviet social-imperialists either; he was no traitor to
Sweden; "balancing" various forces off against each other as far
as possible was his typically Swedish-bourgeois method of ap-
proach. Back in power as prime minister in 1982, he was behind
the public pointing out of the Soviet Union the next year, by
the "Submarine Commission" investigating a certain particularly
provocative and large submarine intrusion into Swedish territo-
rial waters in 1982, as the perpetrator of that provocation.

These social-imperialist provocations despite this went on and
on; Swedish naval officers increasingly complained about their
not even being allowed to fire on the intruders that repeatedly
approached to within meters of the Swedish navy's most impor-
tant underwater base tunnel entrances. At long last, Palme and
his party in late 1985 accepted a somewhat sharper stance
against this. Also, he in early 1985 for the first time sent a
greeting to the annual meeting Swedish Afghanistan Committee,
which was protesting against that open aggression against a
third-world country which Soviet social-imperialism had em-
barked on in 1979 and which was eventually to contribute so
much to its downfall.

In the 1980s, internationally, the tide was already turning
against Soviet social-imperialism, favouring, if any imperialist
big power, then above all the USA. And Palme, as the Swedish
bourgeoisie as a whole too, turned with that tide. This, one
may gather, was not at all to the liking of certain "military
hawks" in the Soviet Union.

=A47. WHAT OTHER PIECES OF EVIDENCE (THAN THE ONE
BRIEFLY MENTIONED IN =A41 ABOVE) ARE THERE FOR
    SOVIET SOCIAL-IMPERIALIST MILITARY CIRCLES'
BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MURDER OF PALME?

This posting, which - I repeat - is dealing with this whole
matter only relatively roughly, intended only to point at some
vital facts in this connection, I shall end by mentioning those
facts which are kown to me and which point at forces within the
Soviet military establishment as the perpetrator of that 1986
crime.

1) On 11.03.1986, that is, less than two weeks after the murder,
a daily newspaper published here in Malm=F6, the Sydsvenskan, had
as its dominating headline on page 1: "A STATE LIES BEHIND THE
MURDER" ("according to a well-reputed intelligence source").
This paper was and is fairly staunchly pro-"Western" and pro-
US-imperialist. It obviously would never have carried such a
headline (plus - of course - rather unclear article) if it had
been some US forces that were actually under suspicion. This and
some other circumstances which there were at that time indicate
that the actual intention was to point at forces of the Soviet
Union as the perpetrators.

Typically too, the contents of that article were never repeated
by that paper nor quoted by others.

2) On 08.03.1986, that is, shortly before this rather unique
newspaper headline had appeared, the then Swedish foreign
minister had held a press conference in which he pointedly
asked for the assistance, in solving that recent murder of the
prime minister here, of a number of states which he mentioned
by name, this including the Soviet Union.

This rather strange action above all had the significance of
course of the Swedish political establishment's taking the
trouble of publicly "absolving" all those states mentioned from
suspicion of complicity in that murder. And why the "necessity"
of doing this? Obviously - one may gather - because one of these
states actually *was* liable to come under suspicion in this
case, in the eyes of people here, because of the entire politi-
cal (and military) situation in the vicinty of Sweden at that
time. The foreign minister was "bending over backwards" to say
"*we* suspect none of you".

[The following two points, concerning two later events in 1986
respectively in early 1987 which have not publicly been put
into a connection with the murder of Palme, don't in themselves
indicate *which* big power one must suspect as the perpetrator
of these respective actions, but they should, I hold, at least
be considered in the context of that murder and also do point,
since no forces of US imperialism would have a sufficiently
strong motive for it, once more to forces of Soviet social-im-
perialism.]

3) On 29.11.1986, a military mobilisation depot in a wooded
area at J=E4rna not far from Stockholm, containing some 18 tons
of high explosives, exploded with a sizeable bang. There was
some speculation afterwards about "weapon thieves wanting to
erase all traces of their burglary", a ridiculous "explanation";
the real reason was never found (or not told to the public). A
connection in time here, never publicly mentioned, is the fact
than on the following day, Palme's successor as prime minister,
Ingvar Carlsson, was to hold his first important speech on
foreign policy (in Helsinki, Finland). The (admittedly unclear)
event of J=E4rna in my judgement quite likely was an act of a
big power's putting political pressure to bear, in a manner
which has been used on some other occasions too, in Sweden and
in some other European countries: A criminal "warning shot".

It should be pointed out in connection with this event and with
the one I shall mention below that in late 1986 and early 1987,
the investigation of the murder of Palme was still being led
by Hans Holmér, and was going then in a certain direction,
which, though not in itself correct and not aiming quite di-
rectly at forces of Soviet social-imperialism, was liable at
least indirectly to implicate such forces. Against this (so far
unclear) "main venue" there at that time started a very in-
tense media campaign - so intense, in fact, that it was obvious
that behind it were some superpower forces who were feeling a
considerable threat to certain interests of theirs.

4) On 15.01.1987, the War Material Inspector of Sweden (in
charge of the office deciding how and to what country arms ex-
ports should be permitted), Vice-Admiral Fredrik Algernon, was
pushed by someone from behind in front of an incoming train on
a subway station in Stockholm and killed. Algernon (as I on
my part learned only much later) was part of a group of people
who, obviously not trusting the "pro" forces entirely, had
privately engaged in trying to find out who killed Palme.

By the media, this additional murder - which initial reports
clearly showed that it to be - eventually was "written off" as
"an accident". In all likelyhood, it was a further act of
pressure against all actual investigation of the murder of
Palme, an act too that could more or less only have been ordered
and organized by the same kind of forces in the world who did
the same to the prime minister here.

Relatively soon after that second murder, Holmér was dismissed
as leader of the Palme murder investigation. The massive criti-
cism against him in the main obviously had been unfair. All
later official "investigations" of that murder in fact have
very clearly had as their main aim to confuse the issue and
decieve the public completely.

5) In the Soviet Union, an interesting TV program was made in
late 1986 which was shown on Swedish telvision too, on 27.01.
1987, entitled "Who Murdered Olof Palme?". Was this an outright
provocation, in the manner of the Al Capone type of gangsters,
who would first kill a competitor and then send flowers to his
widow? No. That program, containing above all a rather theatri-
cal "discussion" of the case between some imagined personages,
obviously was made by the Gorbachev group in the Soviet Union.
In veiled terms, it assailed some "old rightist forces" as the
guilty party. Several things in that TV program seem to indi-
cate - although this thing is unclear too - that it was inten-
ded to counterattack certain forces in the Soviet Union itself.

6) On 26.08.1989, after the disclosure in Sweden (mentioned
in =A41 above) of what an agent of the Soviet military intelli-
gence agency GRU had said (as listened to by bugging), indica-
ting prior knowledge of the murder of Palme, there was a small
notice in the (West) German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zei-
tung (as I happened to see), on how "a spokesman of the armed
forces of the Soviet Union" was "entr=FCstet" (which is German,
not for "disarmed" although "R=FCstungen" means armaments, but
for "appalled") at the statements in Swedish media according to
which they, the Soviet military, would have had anything to do
with that murder.

One may ask: What business did a spokesman of the Soviet Union
and in particular one *of the armed forces* of that state, have
to make a statement on what was said in some media in Sweden?

This statement did have the character of "protesting too much".
And interestingly enough, it was never reported on in any of
the media here in Sweden either.

So far, an only brief mention of some facts of importance con-
cerning the murder of Palme in 1986, on the occasion of the
latest scandalous action here so clearly intended to conceal
and protect the actual perpetrators of that crime.
