M-G murder plan at Spoons': Sorry, mixed Sean & Ferdi
[Posted: 13.01.98]

In my recent 2-part posting "M-G murder plan at Spoons':
Massive protests!", the reproduced postings by Sean Olds and
by Ferdi got mixed up in my glueing-together, part 2/2. I
apologize to both.

This is how their respective postings should read:

Why new list rules ?

I dont think there is a demonstrable problem with new list
members. I am one and was attracted by the open and freewheeling
nature of the contributions.

I dont see the problem with maleki's or marten's contributions.
whether correct or not, they stimulate thought and discussion.

The m-i list operates well as a moderated list with a three post
per day limit and no other monitoring on characters or per
centages.

The post per day, character ceiling and per centage cap do not
seem to me to address any real problem. I had thought that the
strength of the spoons lists lay in the promotion of free
speech. Free speech needs no metering to promote quality. It is
the ideas and the consistency or provoking-ness of the speakers
which relates to quality. Stifle the speaker, stifle the speech.

It is disappointing to see a censor's touch applied as a
rationale for promoting speech.

Understood that the spoons collective is not a communist cell
but what does that have to do with the price of tea in, say,
china ? Is the alternative a set of censorship rules or no
marxism lists ?

As to the "problem" of reading so many posts, I had thought
that one of the acquired skills of e-mail use was the ability to
pick and choose. I had also thought that one of the advantages
of the computer environment was the ability to sort through
large amounts of information to find what you are interested in.

Free speech in volume is not a problem. The recurring felt-need
to censor, particularly using "content-neutral" rules, is.

Just a few thoughts from a newbie.

Well Hans

It would seem your proposals to destroy the list have not met
with a favourable air..there is one way to decide though..put it
to a vote..democratic and fair..do we want to be regulated or
allowed the freedom to write what we want?

[So far Sean and Ferdi]
