Subject: M-I: Union Positions

 >> Of course, in order to counter the pull towards bureaucracy, our
members who take these positions are accountable the their party
branches and the local party fractions in their industry. The lack
of this discipline will make things harder for Jon should he take
a position. Having said that, he's survived all these years as
a revolutionary, so I can't imagine he's going to throw it all
away now just because he's been elected to some post or other.
Lesser mortals should beware though. Adam. <<

Jon Flanders:

Sounds like your organization has a sensible position. I am rather
hoping that I don't have to take a position this time. The problem is
that I have been on the job long enough for it to have become "my turn".
It isn't as if on the local level people are clamoring for the thankless
job of battling a huge corporation. When someone has shot off his mouth
as much as I have, and something like the CSX takeover looms, the
pressure rises for me to do something.

I intend to circulate a detailed account of my approach politically if
I do run. I want the ranks to know what they are getting into, and give
them a chance to decide if this is what they want.

As far as the pull to the bureaucracy, I think the fact that the
current local chair doesn't want to run again is telling. He has all the
attributes of one who could have risen, in the positive sense, things
like intelligence and political saavy. The shine is off that path for
someone like him these days.
