All 8 unions representing 140,000 workers in over 100 UK universities today anounced they had won ballots for strike action. On 19th November the whole UK Higher Education system will be shut down or at least seriously disrupted by trade union power. The national students body, the National Union of Students are supporting the days protest because of shrinking student grants. I will try to post more to this list but am up quite a lot of organising at the moment. I'm on the national cttee of the university technicians (MSF union) and on the joint union cttee at Bristol UNI. The background to the dispute is spending squeeze, increased workloads, increased student debt, job insecurity, increased play of market forces etc etc. I'll try to answer any questions (although there must be others on this list involved) and would appreciate it if this news is passed to any other relevant lists. As you can see i am too excited to type as coherently as i usually do (which isn't very) and my ability to make any assesment of the importance of this development has entirely dissapeared.... will brown Bristol UK --- from list marxism-international-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
