Peasants and supporters from Latin America, U.S., Asia, and the
Philippines join anti-imperialist rallies in Metromanila on the occasion
of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Women have staged a
Global Anti-Imperialist counter-summit, and peasants have staged

Dear Ruth,

Warmest greetings. Thank you very much for the canvass bagpack which I got only at 3 p.m. today, November 14. I gave Dayling the bag meant for her.

The canvass bagpack is a great comfort because it is much lighter. I used to carry a leather bagpack(heavy duty talaga) which, even if I carry only a few items, is already giving pain to my back. And to think that I carry a lot of stuff(mostly documents) everyday. In fact, I have been having back pains because of said bag. Which is why I had to request another bag from you.

Many thanks indeed.

Yesterday, we had a successful march from Mendiola to the US Embassy, with about 3,000, mostly peasants and other sectors from Central Luzon and also Southern Tagalog. The foreign participants to the Anti-Imperialist World Peasant Summit marched together with us, and of course, they were the main attraction in said march. The foreigners were chanting Imperialismo, ibagsak! feyudalismo(that is how they pronounced it), ibagsak! The US delegation had a christmassy type of chanting which went this way: US-Ramos has to go, hey, hey,ho,ho. And the Latin American delegation chanted too: El pueblo unido, hamas sera vencido!

William Hinton, the white-haired American and China expert, marched bravely with us, but had to rest for awhile, but then resumed marching again. When we reached the embassy he sprawled on the cemented sidewalk and enjoyed the breeze and the militant people around him.

During the opening ceremony AIWPS, Ces received a warm and loud applause; but the loudest and longest was received for William Hinton.

Please tell Emil that most of the Latin American delegates always referred to the anti-imperialist struggle in Cuba, Fidel Castro, Che Guevarra, socialismo(according to their perception).

Anyway, Ces was truly overwhelmed by the warm, eager, and friendly welcome he got from all of us here. During the closing ceremony of the AIWPS, when we sang the Internationale solemnly and when one by one many of the delegates were going to a mural to sign their names, I went to Ces and hugged him and said, "Welcome home"; by that time, Ces was wiping away his tears. He had to be re-introduced to many of kasamas here or introduced to his "penpals"- people he would write to frequently but never met. There were lots of hugging with him. Many bienvenida parties are lined up for him. Please tell all these things to Yvonne and Luthi.

The AIWPS activities and statements were overshadowed by the "arrest" of Popoy Lagman. We were sometimes treated as additional stories to the main story; para bagang "Meanwhile..." lang tayo sa nasabing arrest. We were all amused when we heard of Popoy's arrest. "Palabas" sabi naming lahat.

Please acknowledge newspapers and most especially the letter containing the full assessment of the expo trip of Petros to one region in the Philippines.

Please ask Rio to acknowledge naman(second reminder) the gift from his mother for his house in NL. Otherwise, future padala from here will not be entertained by me anymore. This is a threat, not a promise.

Re the asylum resolution, the AIWPS approved it during their last plenary session last November 13.

I hope you are receiving all news from our webpage: http://www.sequel.net~bayan

O sige, hanggang dito na muna.

Media groups denounce rights abuses in Clark
By Gerald G. Lacuarta

CLARK FIELD, Pampanga -- Three media organizations here have condemned the harassment of reporters by Clark security men during a farmers, rally here Friday.

In a joint statement, the Pampanga Press Club (PPC), Metro Clark Police Press Corps (MCPPC) and the
Pampanga Press Photographers (PPP) said Clark security officer Alejandro Natividad chased Chris Navarro of Today for taking pictures during the rally.

"Natividad should undergo a seminar on basic human rights," said the statement. "Clark is no longer a military base."

The three media organizations called for the termination of Natividad from the CDC security department.

CDC security chief Col. Eduardo Resos could not be reached for comment.

Natividad, who was in plainclothes, led some 40 other security guards who dispersed 25 members of the Alyansa ng Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luson(AMGL) during a rally in front of the

Clark Development Corporation (CDC) offices demanding a dialogue with CDC president Romeo David.

Navarro started taking pictures as Natividad and his men confiscated the protest streamers and flag of the AMGL.

While Natividad was pinning farmer Armando Arceo, who was holding the AMGL flag, he turned to Navarro and said: "You keep on taking pictures! Do you have a clearance?"

''Sir, I'm not one of them (protesters), I'm with the media," Navarro answered.

Natividad, however, insisted that Navarro show a clearance to shoot pictures. Navarro then told Natividad that he was just doing his job as a reporter.

To this, Natividad answered: "What if I also do my job, which is to jail you, can you do anything about it?"

When Navarro prepared to leave to have the films dew Natividad chased him but Navarro sped away in his car.

In a telephone interview with the INQUIRER, Navarro said he was "publicly humiliated and professionally degraded" and called for the termination of Natividad.

A source in the CDC said Natividad even complained to the public information staff of the CDC asking if Navarro and other reporters had a clearance to cover the rally.

The same source said three motorcycle-riding security guards were dispatched to block Navarro's pickup.

When the INQUIRER pressed Natividad for comment, he pushed away this reporter's tape recorder.

CDC public information chief Lycette Ramos had asked Navarro to apologize for the "unfortunate incident."
"We at CDC have never and will never interfere in media's professional duties to report the news," said Ramos. "We believe that media is our partner."

Ramos said David has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Ramos, however, also received flak from some reporters here after she prevented them from interviewing AMGL officers after the dialogue at the CDC offices.
