Subject: M-I: Robert Scheetz and feminism

I think Doug is right to put some pressure on Robert Scheetz
to make clear his interest in the list.

According to my collated index for 1995 Robert
Scheetz was posting between 30 June and 13 August 1995.

Subjects included bourgeois feminism and identity politics.

Among people who responded critically or very critically
were Lisa Rogers and Matt D.

My recollection was that the ideas were at best muddled
and at worse provocative.

I thought I recalled Louis P bringing his contributions to
an end with a big blast, which actually worked. But I have
not checked this.

My differences with Louis P on this sort of question in the
past on M1 has been while this sometimes worked, at other times
a big blast led to a bigger and more time consuming flame war. My
tactics on the totally unrestricted M1 list were that we had
no alternative but to try to engage every single isolated
but determined poster, *somehow* to see the wisdom of moderating
themselves. That I freely admit had considerable disadvantages too.

I welcome Louis P's comments now about the fact that the 3 post
rule makes all this much easier to handle. Totally ignoring
trivial, unproductive, or provocative posts is now not
only the preferred option of most subscribers but is also more viable,
however unusual the agenda of the odd-ball subscriber.

I would still tend to say the core answer lies in a clarification
of the *content* of the contradictions - in this case
of the relationship between marxism and feminism and identity politics,
but that debate about the issues of content, might take place better
over the head of Robert Scheetz than with him.

Alternatively
I believe that Spoons are moving ahead with ideas of a marxism-feminism
list, which would presumably be moderated, and Robert Scheetz would
presumably have to earn his place by the constructive way he
demonstrated his ability to clarify issues.

Clearly he has a problem
that some at least doubt his ability to do so.
