I left out a crucial "not" in my transcription of the  the conclusion from
Manuel Castell's celebrated new book The Rise of The Network Society:

"So the diffusion of information technologies, while certainly displacing
workers and eliminating some jobs, has not resulted, and it does NOT seem
that it will result in the forseeable future, in mass unemployment.  This
in spite of the rise of unemployment in European economies, a trend that is
related to social institutions rather to the new production system."
