These people have their counterparts in the GDR, China, Russia etc. When people argue that there has been a social counterrevolution in these countries since 1989, they have the problem of explaining how these people flourished under both the pre and post 1989 regimes. Today in Serbia, we can see a possible alternative to the Stalinist - free market - nationalist ruling class. Not in the leaders of the mass demonstrations, but in the forces that they have mobilised - students and workers. What seems to be preventing the movement from spreading to the workplaces at present is that workers quite rightly do not trust the free market - nationalist opposition. For the movement to mobilise the forces required to get rid ot Milosevic, and as end in itself, class demands need to be linked to the question of democracy. What is exciting about this movement is that just at the same time there is a very similar movement developing in Croatia as well. At last, an alternative to the war mongers is emerging. Adam.
