From: "Rosser Jr, John Barkley" <rosserjb-AT-jmu.edu> Subject: M-I: Gorbachev and Hungary Date: Mon, 16 Dec 1996 17:43:25 -0500 () Two further observations are that, although Gorby denounced the Hungarians for borrowing from westerners in a profligate manner, he imitated them, and also he left agriculture collectivized, just as had the Hungarians. One has to look hard to find a model that Gorby was imitating more than the Hungarian one. He may have lusted after western goodies, with Raisa pushing him with her AMEX gold card, but he remained in the eastern mold in many ways, including maintaining ultimate control in the hands of the CP and resisting major privatizations.
