Subject: M-I: Reply to Adam on Serbia.

Adam recent reports from Serbia on the workers beginning to move in support
of the opposition must be countered here. Partially because Adam has a
tendency (as a state capitalist) to wind up on the wrong side of the
barricades. And events in Serbia which are quite complicated makes his
almost cheerleading reports extremely dangerous.

In a recent report by the Washinton Post reporter Steve Kinzer (December 11)
he had the following to say.

First of all he said that he was quite shaken by his visit with the
leadership of the student movement in Belgrad.

"The student movement is controlled by the radical Serbian Nationalists who
in the last days have recieved support statements from the Bosian Serbian
government."

"The student leaders claim that Milosevic betrayed the Serbs in Bosnien anf
Croatia and sold them out to the west."

According to Steve Kinzer the meetings always begin with the old Yugoslavian
Monarchist National song and women are told to wear the traditional Serbian
national clothes. "Greater Serbian" ideas with some very bizarr
particulars-like Serbian is the
super race of humanity-appear to be widespread amongst the faculty...

The philosospy professor Miladin Zivolic who was black listed 1968 and
recieved the right to return to the school 1987 told Kinzer why he stopped
working again.

"I could not tolerate my work any longer. I was forced to listen to teachers
and students who spoke for and supported the Bosien facists like Radovan
Karadzik and Ratko Mladic. It is worse then Communism.

Well Adam? This does not really sound very good now does it. So naturally my
question to you is; In your ivor to smash what you believe to be a state
capitalist regime just how long are you and your party prepared to go? Does
the SWP support this movement? When push comes to shove it will be the
political leaderships of either the movement or the ex Stalinist Milosovich
which will be opposing each other on the barricades. Naturally this could
change if a Bolshevik Leninist leadership were to develop. But which side of
the barricades will you be on Adam? The side of the facist students and
capitalists counter-revolution or defending the collective property forms of
the deformed Serbian state? Naturally this does not mean giving any
political support to the Stalinists but when the guns come out and they will
which side will Adam and the SWP be on?

Warm Regards
Bob Malecki

PS: The Usec at least here in Sweden who have a history of tailing just
about any movement are even being careful with this stuff.
