Subject: M-I: Academia and the real world

Louis: First of all, tenured professors don't have to worry about getting
fired (well, at least until recently.) Next, they tend to use language
that is geared to the academy rather than the language that ordinary
people speak. The other week, Kevin Cabral posted comments from Chomsky on
the tendency for postmodernists in the academy to use jargon. This is also
a big problem for your journal and "Science and Society". You folks are
simply not interested in having a conversation with the sorts of people
that Chomsky or Michael Parenti do: church groups, unions, peace groups.
You are mainly interested in talking to each other. This should be obvious
to anybody who spends a day or two on PEN-L. I try to keep up on some of
this stuff, (hell, I've been reading it for 28 years--what am I talking
about) but I can barely get through an issue of "Science and Society."

Tell you the truth, I have never even looked at your journal, but frankly
when I saw the table of contents for back issues when you sent me that
Nicaragua submission to review, I was really daunted. It had "academia"
stamped all over it.

Trust me, Paul, if you ever got a job as a computer programmer, you will
be astonished how easy it is not to study the "transformation" problem.
