Language is part of the force s of production, the relations of production, and of the superstructure, IMO. It ALSO has its own laws of development which guide its development and interaction with the rest of society ( as, for example, religion, science, etc ) although these are subservient to the laws which govern society as a whole. Language is NOT "prior to" production. Engels was right ( as usual ) : Language develops "when men have something to say to each other". First the production takes place, then the language develops to describe it. Then and only then does language enable further developments in the base ( forces and relations ) and superstructure. And also, sometimes language can actually hold back these further developments. On this question, Engels and I are right, Darwin and Carrol wrong :-) Adam.
