Someone told me today that the Oakland School's Board's declaration that
Ebonics is a seperate languange was actually an attempt to get the sort of
resources for Black kids that are available under English as a Second
Language and other language training programs. Basically, it was a
strategic move designed to seek out funds rather than, or not merely, some
sort of Black nationalist or Afrocentric statement. I do not know if this
is true, but if it is, it makes the idea seem like a plausible move and a
damning indictment of racist and class-biased educational system.
