Upon thinking the matter over, I realize that on the
ownership criterion, there are probably some more socialist
countries out there besides the ones I already listed, some
of which consciously identify themselves as such. Two
obvious additions are Syria and Iraq. There are also some
in Africa.
With regard to Louis Proyect's denial of the role of
the ending of Soviet aid in the early 90s collapse of the
Cuban macroeconomy, I would simply note that there was not
much change in US embargo policy at that time, although
there has since been a tightening with Helms-Burton. What
changed was the cutoff of Soviet aid. It doesn't take a
professor of economics to put two and two together and see
that it was probably the Soviet aid cutoff that triggered
the tanking. This obviously has implications for how
Soviet aid propped up the Cuban economy, despite all of
Louis's fervent efforts in the Columbia Library seeking
some numbers to support his story.
