Petterson and Lindgren have given us an interesting
account of what is going on in Albania. I have some
questions. What are their sources? How do they know what
is going on on the ground? Are they there?
If everything is so hunky dory, why are there hundreds
of people per day, most of them anti-Berisha, trying to
flee to Italy?
What did these articles say that the IMF supposedly
forced Berisha to rescind? When did the IMF do this? (I
find it very hard to believe that the IMF would oppose
government guarantees of bank deposits; the US has them).
I must note that the hunger for the pyramids of the
Albanians did appear extreme compared to anything we have
seen anywhere. Two obvious explanations are the extreme
poverty in Albania relative to its neighbors and the
naivete of the population regarding markets. Readers of
this list can figure out for themselves where this was
coming from, and it is not something inherent in the
Albanians themselves as a people, but more likely the
history of their country over the last several decades.
