I agree with the passage from Mandel which Jason quotes in return,
although I am unfamiliar with Mandel except for his 
reputation.

This exchange for me has been what these lists can do at their *best*
- acknowledge that at this present stage of international politics
people come from a wide variety of exposure to marxist ideas, and it
is often accidental which branch of marxism each individual has 
encountered. The opportunity to cross fertilise, check out, test
and argue, providing both sides think it is worth actually thinking
an argument through, is unique. And to co-operate. 

That does not preclude people 
deciding they want more specialised lists for specific purposes.

A list open for content like this is not a specialised list and 
will always have that disadvantage. It also has important 
advantages.
