how to parse this if one is a socialist and believes in democracy in any
recognizable sense of that concept ...

isnt this a good representation of what is wrong with a stalinist view of
leftism ? lenin becomes the rationalizer of the Leader principle on the left,
the antithesis of democracy. how can this viewpoint lead one to viewing
workers as anything other than objects, instruments, something to be pushed
and pulled and manipulated ? and it is just this "what is to be done"
travesty of leninism which leads directly to purge trials and real violence.
