Andrew Wayne Austin cited a few books to check out regarding generalities about what is "female" and what is "male", what factors make females and males, and the often crude genetic determinism that goes into these explanations. I would add to his list of sources to check out: Ruth Hubbard's "Exploding the Gene Myth", a recent book by Robert Sapolsky (I think called "The Trouble with Testosterone" -- at least that was the title of a recent article by him in Discover magazine), Stephen Jay Gould's "The Mismeasure of Man", and pretty much anything by Susan Oyama or Richard Lewontin.
