Date: 21 Apr 97 22:38:26 EDT From: jonathan flanders <72763.2240-AT-CompuServe.COM> Subject: M-I: Cross-posting To All List Members, I have been away for several days, and had planned to be away for more, but there was a death in the family. At any rate I am back now, and am cognizant of the row going on over cross-posting. Zeynep, who is away this week, warned the list recently that we would act against this. Cross-posting is a problem for several reasons. It adds volume to what we hope will be a low volume, high quality list. More importantly, it makes a hash of intelligent discussion, with someone on one list responding to someone on another via a third party. Some people crosspost because they disagree with the division into multiple lists. They would prefer one monster list like the old M1, with its 100 posts a day. Fine, there is Marxism-General, where there are no limits. This list was set up with limits, and will be limited further now and then as we(the moderators) refine the rules. You are free to disagree with and argue for different rules, but right now...the moderators rule. Therefore....be warned, if the moderators from this moment on, note repeated crossposting by a list member, that member will be suspended for a week, after one warning. The next suspension will be longer, and after that a permanent ban. Now to do this poses some obvious problems. What about an important announcement of an event that people on many lists should be aware of? We will have to be flexible about that sort of thing. What should be discouraged, and will be discouraged is cross-posted DISCUSSION. Please have enough respect for this list, and others, to respect the discussion going on here. If you want to involve others in a MI debate, they can join this list. At this time, no one is being singled out. Lots of people on this list have crossposted now and again. Now, however, is time to tighten up a bit, in the interests of a better list.
