There's a grand essay by Norberto Bobbio on civil society in Hegel, Marx 
and Gramsci.  It's in one of those books of his that Polity/Minnesota 
published a little while ago.  Very clear and informative.

Also the special issue of _Social Text_ on civil society from a year or 
so ago, with essays by George Yudice and Michael Hardt, among others.
