Hugh's roster of answers to my new/old questions still leaves me wondering.
In the first place, what I meant by "miraculous state take-over" was, of
course, socialist take-over...that would be, at present, the miraculous part.
However, no state, even one with huge resources like ours, can be a enclave
these days. And while obviously capital is more than money, nevertheless
investment does create other forms of capital by constructing infrastructure,
securing missing resources, and developing labor skills. When the USSR began
its experiment, it was cut off from investment and had to dredge it up from
agriculture -- at great human and political cost.
And I'd like to understand better how electronic movement of capital
works, quite apart from the global casino of financial speculation.
These are genuine questions, not covert political positions. I'm assuming
we all share the same goal here, whatever our tactical differences, and
need not engage combatively. -Renate Bridenthal
