Lou, I know you have hopes for him, but I think Kabila is a capitalist
roader. Lisa McGowan, who's a smart economist with the U.S. wing of the 50
Years Is Enough campaign says that his plans are pure neoliberal orthodoxy,
just like his patron Museveni of Uganda. It's not for nothing that Kabila
turned over the diamond mines to a firm based in Hope, Arkansas. The man
from Hope, Bill Clinton, is pushing an Africa initiative that means deals
for well-connected U.S. businesses and further austerity and market opening
in Africa. I hope I'm wrong, but I think Kabila will turn out to be part of
this.
