Subject: M-I: Civility article & "klunky prose"

Dennis:

The essay "Seduced by Civility" by Benjamin DeMott appeared in the
December 9, 1996 number of *The Nation.* See also DeMott's recent
book, *The Trouble with Friendship: Why Americans Can't Think
Straight About Race.*

Doug: the arguments DeMott makes raise questions about why something
gets read as "unclear and klunky," questions we might take up at some
point.

However, I'm at work on student papers and grades now, and then I
need to get back to Russell and Yoshie.
