In a message dated 97-07-05 09:42:38 EDT, you write:

<< Our attitude to the SDS was to wish it would disappear. When it did, the
American left was much worse off actually. A massive left-wing student
group with a Marxist outlook could have made a difference in the 70s, 80s
and today. Instead we left SDS to the Maoists who turned it into a zoo. So
we kept our Marxism to ourselves. The only way you could become a Marxist
was to join the SWP's youth group so that you too could learn how Oehler
was wrong and Cannon was right, or why the Mandelistas were
 "petty-bourgeois".

Camejo began to discover how sectarian we were when in the 1970s he
proposed that the party run a joint mayoral campaign against Koch with the
Puerto Rican Socialist Party and other left formations. He was ostracized
for making such a suggestion and this led to his sabbatical from the party
 and eventual expulsion.

Geez Louise (literally) This guy Proyect gets me soooooo frustrated, cuz
he's only a few inches away from the truth sometimes....and then misses it by
lightyears...

Okay baby, look Cannon was right God dammit and Oehler was indeed wrong.
You act as if this was a conflict between Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.
The conflict between Cannon and Oehler as to the correct orientation for a
communist grouping to enter a mass social democratic formation in order to
intersect a growing and developing left wing is of absolute crucial
importance. The failure of the POUM in Spain to act as Cannon did and enter
the Spanish Socialist youth the PSUC basically sealed the fate of the
revolutionary movement in Spain for 50 years. This was one time, that
Trotskyism was popular and the rotten bloc centrists like Andres NIn (later
martyred by Stalinism) chose to make a left-right bloc with the
Bukharinites...

Attention Vladimir ---- and those that are still raving about trotskyite
bukharinites, Trotsky at great cost rejected this bloc and broke with the
POUM. The negative results of this unprincipled blocking can be viewed in
the movie Land and Freedom and Orwells Homage to Catalonia.

And it took and would have taken a much larger intervention to break
revolutionaries from the suicidal opportunistic policies of the right wing
Maoists in SDS. The Spartacists were correct to enter SDS and oppose the
split but also primarily tail Progressive Labor because of its working class
orientation.

And were the Mandelites petit bourgeois? You bet your ass they were, but
the SWP was simply a different type of gross Social democratic opportunism.
Yes they could play orthodox Cannonites when they wanted to...which was
every so often.

And Peter Camejo, well that traitor damn well deserved to be expelled. Now
he runs some obnoxious so called progressive investment trust... Screw
him....
