It is true that the Woodcraft Folk had a communist input. More properly
speaking, though, it was a product of the co-oprative movement. This is
how it describes itself today (or, to be precise, a year ago when my son
used to go).

It is still going, but by no means going strong. It is a middle class
affair, now, and perhaps always was in part. It advocated sharing and
other nice values which are not incompatible with communism, but which
are more like a very soggy version of it. But then communism in Britian
is a very soggy affair anyway.

It certainly does not compare to the communist youth and childrens
organisations I have witnessed on the continent and in places like the
state of Israel. In the latter, for example, the CP (close to 100 per
cent Arab, naturally enough given the nature of the Zionist state) is
awash with communist emblems and iconography.

Certainly by the time that Damon from Blur was a member, the Woodcraft
Folk would have had precious little to do with anything more political
than banning the bomb.

Mind you, if he *is* a communist and wants to make a substantial
donation to rebuilding a communist movement here, could someone forward
the CAG's address to him.

Jim
