Subject: Re: M-I: Chris Hani's murder

Chris asks for the complete FT quote. Here's the relevant part (from
*Financial Times*, August 12, 1997, p. 4 "Chris Hani's killers appeal for
amnesty"):

"...recent investigations have suggested the assassination may have been
part of a broader conspiracy which could extend to the highest ranks of the
former Nationalist government and the ANC...The Truth Commission has also
received documents suggesting that ANC officials were aware of a plot to
kill Mr Hani, viewed as a possible successor to [Mandela]...but his rivals
within the [ANC] rejected his requests for protection."

A report in *Der Spiegel* in June quotes a Norwegian government source as
claiming to have information that the bodyguard was part of the conspiracy,
and that Hani had gone jogging to meet a friend who never showed. The same
report also mentions a number of "high level" ANC leaders who feared Hani as
the natural successor to Nelson Mandela, who was ill at the time.

[Incidentally, I was Chris Hani's bodyguard when he visited Massachusetts in
May, 1991 as part of a tour for the *People's Daily World*. A gracious,
convivial man who seemed at the time totally dedicated to a socialist
southern Africa]

Anyway, I quite agree with Jim and Chris about this Hirson character. A
real maggot. Sorry to say, the net effect of Trotskyitism everywhere has
always been to aid imperialism, though with the "fall" of the Soviet Union,
they are coming at quite a discount nowadays.
