For what it's worth, this is exactly the sort of discussion we should be
striving for on marxism-international. Every so often something comes up
like the UPS strike which tests people's preconceived notions. The last
time we had a discussion like this was around the militias and the Million
Man March. Doug and I, who usually slavishly echo each other's opinion,
found ourselves disagreeing. People like Adolph Reed and Alex Cockburn were
also disagreeing in public.

The point is that as the class struggle deepens there will be constant
challenges to evaluate complex social and political phenomena that simply
transcend old shibboleths. One of the advantages of having a list like m-i
is that we have consciously striven for a culture where people are free to
speak their mind without being denounced as "Mensheviks".

My first reaction to Louis G.'s complaints about Carey was to stiffen and
say just the opposite thing. But the correct assessment may fall somewhere
in between. We should pat ourselves on the collective shoulder for having
the dedication to create such a space. The moderators also deserve some
credit. There is no tougher job than moderating this list. It's a little
bit like juggling rabid wolverines.

Louis P.
