Subject: M-I: "holocaust"-the word

I wonder when the phrase "the Holocaust" became current. My suspicion is
that it was chosen and propagated by pro-Zionist agencies and poublications
and publicists (in the US?) rather recently -- perhaps in the 1970s? If
indeed it is a retrospective definition, a relabeling of history, then the
argument that discussions of "the Holocaust" (i.e., the Jewish holocaust in
the Nazi era) may be fueled mainly by modern Zionist efforts to justify
Israeli imperialism, particularly territorial aggrandizement after,
perhaps, 1973, seems plausible.

Can anyone help me out on this question -- the original or early usage of
the phrase "the Holocaust" applied to the Jewish WW2 holocaust? Does anyone
remeber hearimng or seeing it used, say, in the 60s? 50s?
