James Heartfield is right to point out the undemocratic aspects of
Catherine MacKinnon's anti-porn crusades and Lani Guinier's odd
appropriation of Madison's elite-protecting mechanisms. But as anyone who's
ever spent any time around the white American working class knows, do they
ever hold some repellent, bigoted beliefs. Is it divisive and "PC" to point
this out? Ask a woman who's ever tried to enter a traditionally male
blue-collar profession, or a black walking into a white working class
neighborhood in Brooklyn. What are we supposed to do? Ignore this in the
name of some fanciful "unity"? Maybe Judith Butler is right after all about
those "neoconservative Marxists" who would purchase unity at the price of
effacement and exclusion.
