Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 12:13:13 +0000 From: James Heartfield <James-AT-heartfield.demon.co.uk> Subject: M-I: Indigenous peoples Louis Proyect recently quoted an article from Living Marxism about the Yanomani Indians by Ann Bradley. However, he failed to quote the conclusion of the article which is as follows: My argument with the current method of industrialisation of the third world is that it fails to bring about civilisation or progress. The industrialised world uses countries like Brazil as a source of raw materials and cheap labour. What the Western nations call development has in fact been the systematic denial of any pattern of development that could benefit the indigenous populations of third world countries. Survival's literature calls on us to 'stop civilisation and progress'. I'd say that capitalism is doing a pretty good job of stopping civilisation and progress all by itself.
