Subject: M-I: Romanian charges?

Does anyone know anything about the claims of Romanian (ex) foreign minister
Adrian Severin to the effect that a number of politicians and journalists
had been in the employ of the American CIA? There was an official inquiry,
which of course found no one culpable, but a story in Reuters this morning
raised the charge that Romania was one of a number of eastern countries that
were linked by a US financed "fifth column" stretching back to 1980. There
are veiled references to the Romanian charges in today's *Financial Times*
(p 2), but nothing about the wider suspicions. Last July, the Lebanese
newspaper that broke Iran-Contra published an article by a former KGB
colonel who charged that the current Polish PM (Solidarity) was in the pay
of a "CIA-directed" spy network in eastern Europe. The paper went on to
name a number of prominent Hungarian and Romanian politicians as also being
involved, but cited no evidence.

Any one know anything about this?
