Date: Fri, 5 Dec 1997 22:24:01 -0500 (EST) From: Justin Schwartz <jschwart-AT-freenet.columbus.oh.us> Subject: M-I: Boxing Being sort of an honorary Detroiter, since I went to Michigan and worked in Motown for two summers at the National Lawyer's Guild law center and the United Auto Workers, I'll remark on Louis P's outburst against boxing that in Joe Louis' hometown we see boxing as a sport in which Black men beat white men and Nazis, who may not qualify as "men" at all, into unconsciousness. We also have an annual Eugene V. Debs Memorial Kazoo night at Tiger Stadium (owned, alas, by the repulsive Tom Moynahan, he of Domino's Pizza, Operation Rescue,a nd the Honduran strategic hamlets) in which all the lefties in town come out to the bleachers with our kazoos and irritate the regulars by singing revolutionary songs and refusing to stand for tha national anthem. The slogan is, Stick It to Capitalistic Tools. I should say the male lefties do this. It's largely a he-man, auto workerish sort of thing to do, lots of beer, tattoos, crude jokes. We PC types from Ann Arbor always feel vaguely uncomfortable at this event. I myself am not much into competitive sports, but I havea soft spot in my heart for hopeless baseball teams like the Tigers (and the Cubbies, in Chicago, where I'm heading) and for boxing. Does taht mean I should sign up with the Brit RCP? --Justin --- from list marxism-international-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu ---
