An odd pair of remarks coming, as they do, from one who presumably spent
most of his life as a pedagogue in conversation with *non-marxists* of
varying degrees of believability.  I'm sure Carrol's success as a teacher
derived, at least in part, from his ability to weather the arguments of his
opponents with convincing ones of his own, regardless of the assumptions of
his listeners.  Why should we, in this forum, expect any less? 

And one should not assume "impoverished peasants" are simply hapless actors,
waiting passively for vast impersonal forces to create their history for
them.  Indeed, I am sure Marxists would not "assume" any such thing.
