I stress the importance of disease in order to  confront the old racist
theory that Europeans conquered the "New World" because of their
superiority (in technology or whatever) and the Native A,mericans'
primitivty, superstitiousness, etc. This is a key argument in my book
becauseo of the stress I lay on the importance of the conquest for the rise
of Europe after 1492.
