Nancy,
Here is a variation inspired by Lou P.'s discussion of
James O'Connor's "second contradiction." Not exactly the
same as your presentation, Nancy, but perhaps up the same
alley a bit.
An extension of Marx to ecology is to consider
elements of ecosystems that are self-reproducing. There is
a natural concept of surplus. "Exploitation" by humans
involves taking more than the surplus. This leads to
degradation and destruction of ecosystems. This still does
not deal with the nonrenewable elements of the system,
however.
BTW, pen-l stands for "progressive economists
network-left" or something like that. The list tends to be
dominated by URPE (Union of Radical Political Economics)
types and is definitely more "academic" than this list,
although some non-academics on this list are on it, such as
Louis Proyect and Doug Henwood. The listowner is Michael
Perelman who is at michael-AT-ecst.csuchico.edu. The list is
open to anybody unless they misbehave according to
Michael's rules, explicit and implicit (he warns people
privately if they are getting out of line).
